the wind in her hair...

The beach has been my favorite place for as long as I can remember. Somehow this year it didn't capture me. Not how it used to. I used to sit on the sand and stare at the waves in awe. It would catch me and sweep me away. I felt small, but big. I felt inspired and peaceful. I would feel the wind blow through my hair, and the gritty sand collapsing over my toes and melt in that awesome moment.

While I sat at watched Sadie play our first night at the beach, I felt as if she was feeling those very things. She held her arms out all on her own, feeling the wind from the crashing waves blow past her. I didn't tell her to do anything, in fact I didn't even talk to her, and nobody else did either. She was in her own world, soaking it all in the same way I used to. I followed her around and sat back and watched. For the first time I wasn't in awe of the ocean, but of my daughter and her beauty. She is so amazing.

Topsail Island Part 1

I've been going to Topsail Island my entire life. Each summer my entire family goes for a whole week. We take turns cooking meals and get the chance to spend lots of quality time together. Its so great, and its a tradition that I hope to carry on with my kids when they grow up and have families of their own.

Topsail Island is my absolute favorite place to be, ever. I used to think that I loved the beach, I was wrong. I love Topsail. I don't love sitting out on the beach soaking up rays or playing in the ocean. What I love is searching for the thousands of sharks teeth that swim in the shell deposits. I love the sound. I love sitting and watching the boats sail by and watching carefully waiting to catch a glimpse of a dolphin. I love the beautiful, amazing sunsets that fall over the sound each night, and the pretty haze that covers the water each morning. I love the slow pace of each day.

This post is already a month behind and only shows a quarter of my favorites! Hopefully I'll get the second half up soon... but lets not bet on it! :)

Letters - August 2012

This is Part 4 of my Topsail Island posts, and my August 2012 letter wrapped in one. I never want to forget one minute of my kids growing up or their summers at the beach. I am in love with every single one of these memories.

Dear Griffin,

This summer at Topsail was filled with handfuls of new memories. You found a new love of fishing and thought of nothing else the entire week, with the occasional "jumping and splashing" you wanted to do in the tidal pools. Uncle Nick brought in your light up Mickey Mouse fishing pole the first day and you were in heaven. You gave him a big, "thanks", in your precious excited squeal and started practicing right away. I will never forget your face when I came out just in time to see you catch your first fish. It "ate your bait" and was "cute", I don't think you could have described it any better. Right after you caught it, with help from Justin, he made you give it a kiss. You weren't thrilled with the idea but finally did it after he convinced you it was the right thing to do. I will never forget your big smiles, squeals and giggles each time you saw a fish come out of the water on someones pole. You are the most precious two year old I could ever imagine and I don't love anything more than watching you discover new things. I hope you have a lifetime of new experiences just like this, and I hope I'm there to share them with you along the way.

Love, Mom

Topsail Island - Part 2

Sunsets on Topsail Island are beautiful all by themselves, and with Griffin's silhouette in them they are magic.
